Web Developer

Paragon Force (MLE Enterprises/MLE Technologies), Bloomfield, IN 2008-Present

  • My primary responsibilities are to manage all aspects of a reseller web hosting business; and to support new and existing clients by providing web site design and development, performing custom programming in PHP and ColdFusion, providing email capabilities, conducting domain name management, designing databases and backend administrative systems, creating and supporting e-commerce systems, and performing graphic design work.
  • Other public duties include supporting the computer repair business by providing server and network support to clients, and acting as a backup hardware and software computer repair technician.
  • Secondary duties include setup and administration of a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 server, and the configuration of internal network and private subnets. Some duties include DHCP server, Samba server, users and groups, security, firewall, VPN, and so on.
  • In addition to server and network administration, I provide desktop support and administration, perform application and printer support, design and maintain the company web site, manage company email systems, perform custom programming, and produce a number of publications and advertisements – especially if they require graphic or logo design.
  • Related duties include writing a local newspaper column and classroom instruction at a local community education center.

  • August 2008 – Currently under contract with University Division, Indiana University to program an Events and Deadlines calendar in PHP.
  • April 2008 – Paid by Darin McCullough of McCullough Fabricating, Heltonville, IN to create a custom Excel spreadsheet to calculate the size and cost of custom shipping containers they manufacture for Toyota, to print the shipping label, and to print an itemized billing statement.
  • January 2006 through February 2008 – Hired to create and maintain web site for Heltonville Christian Church. Wrote numerous PHP or Perl scripts and databases. Created and served audio multimedia. Performed installation of audio and projection system. Setup office workstations, a file server, and a multimedia computer.
  • September 2005 through January 2006 – Contract with Health Professions and Prelaw Center, University Division, Indiana University to rework existing web site and to create mail and majordomo web interfaces.
  • August 2005 through December 2005 – Contract with Hewlett-Packard as service technician to travel between eight southern Indiana U.S. Department of Agriculture offices to upgrade hardware and select Compaq servers.
  • February 2004 through May 2005 – Employed by Otis Elevator to upgrade UNIX workstations. Primary duties entailed adding additional hardware to 50 new Sun Blade 2000 workstations with NT cards, installing Solaris 8 and additional application software from ISO images, installing NT to run in a virtual machine, configuring the Solaris OS, network, and other software as necessary, testing workstations, and deploying new CAD/CAM workstations to engineers. Other duties included maintaining NFS and server backups.
  • June 2003 through December 2003 – Employed by Business Placement Office, Kelly School of Business, Indiana University. Moved 150 workstations and 10 servers from Windows workgroup to ADS, set up departmental OU, and defined local and group policies. Upgraded workstations from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Professional. Upgraded 3 servers from Windows 2000 Advanced Server to Windows 2003 Server. Installed Windows 2003 Server on three new servers. Installed ColdFusion MX and IIS 6.0 servers in production and development environments. Helped install Oracle database and replicator on database servers. Responsible for administration of security, patches, SSL licenses, and Norton Anti-Virus server. Maintained file and print server. Ghosted build images. Installed plasma screen and remote control workstation. Built six audio/visual mobile carts with PC, projector, DVD, VCR, and sound system. Maintained 25 printers. Documented new systems and policies. Provided hardware and software support for 18 staff members.
  • March 2003 through October 2003 – Hired by Rick Smale to assist in obtaining domain name, in creating hisChristian Life Coaching web site at ricksmalelifecoaching.com, in SEO, and with various other related tasks.
  • December 2002 – Hired to create web site and catalog for Bogan’s Rugged Outdoor Store in Leesville, IN. Project involved writing web site to provide descriptions, images, and details of products available for purchase, administration templates, search capability, and a feedback form using Perl with flat file database.
  • October 2002 – Hired to create web survey for research project entitled “Communication in a Weird World” for Sue Brown at Kelly School of Business, Indiana University. Project involved writing various ColdFusion templates, interfacing with SQL Server database backend, and providing a MS-Access front-end for administration and reporting. Project was a survey to gather information from grad students.
  • February 2002 through August 2002 – Contracted with UITS/Student Technology Consulting. Provided consulting and advice during transfer of PIE project and servers to Digital Services Lab at IU.

Systems Analyst/Programmer III

UITS/Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 1999-2002

  • My primary responsibility was the administration of production and development SQL, ColdFusion, IIS, Web Site Pro, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 servers in a multi-server non-clustered environment.
  • Secondary responsibilities were the continued design, development, and management of additional applications and modules (discipline, online application, and many others) for the Personnel Information Environment (PIE) I programmed for IU and IUPUI, to train and direct hourly programmers toward that pursuit, and to write technical documentation for the program and its use.
  • As part of the administrative team, other duties included all items listed under the Technical Coordinator position previously held, with the addition of Windows NT/2000/XP workstation administration, ADS OU administration, group security and policies, Red Hat Linux workstation administration, and Mac OS workstation administration.
  • Conducted presentations of PIE at IU, IUPUI, SIGUCCS, and WebDev Share. Gave demonstrations to other universities and other parties interested in purchasing PIE or the technologies used.
  • Served as ColdFusion resource at UITS, IU, and IUPUI. Replicated PIE for Residence Halls and IUPUI Support Center. Supported mission-critical internal and public production applications spanning multiple campuses and departments. Created the only web-based electronic time keeping and pay roll system in use on IU campuses. Created web-based HAF and PTO applications for UITS Finance Office.
  • Provided initial code and database design for HRMS Time (Keeping) system, participated on the HRMS Joint Application Development team, and attended Executive Advisory Committee meetings. Provided consulting to IUS on methods of integrating PeopleSoft and ADS.

Technical Coordinator

UITS/Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 1998-1999

  • Designed, developed, and programmed web-based applications (personnel, scheduling, time keeping, payroll, reports, and utilities) for IU and IUPUI using SQL Server, ColdFusion, and Perl.
  • Hired and trained hourly programmers in SQL, ColdFusion, JavaScript, CSS, and X/HTML. Supervised programmer projects. Worked with faculty to provide material and instruction for CIS classroom projects.
  • Provided overall technology support and direction for 4 administrative team members, 16 hourly support staff, and approximately 185 hourly student consultants in the IU Student Technology Centers.
  • Addressed most technical needs of my group. Evaluated, organized, and led most of the group’s technology projects. Created technical documentation for systems, software, and procedures. Administered group file spaces. Participated in equipment needs evaluations, setting staff objectives, determining department policies, making hiring decisions, and orientating new staff.

Technical Specialist

UITS/IUPUI, Indianapolis, IN 1997-1998

  • Provided overall software, hardware, network, and presentation technologies support to the Learning Environment zones at IUPUI and Herron School of Art, to instructors in the classroom, and at special events.
  • Assisted in implementing, maintaining, troubleshooting, verifying, and rebuilding the zone Novel servers, PC and Macintosh workstations, and presentation support equipment. Helped build and test workstation software images.
  • Developed and maintained department web site. Created specialized forms, CGI scripts, a personnel database, and other flat-file databases in Perl. Programmed a public web-based classroom reservation system still in use.
  • Managerial duties included training staff, scheduling labs and staff, creating reports and documentation, preparing work orders and time sheets, ordering supplies, organizing and conducting staff meetings, and creating a variety of databases and spreadsheets.

Zone 3 Coordinator

  • Continued to fulfill the overall responsibilities of the Support Staff position listed below, with the addition of managerial and technical responsibilities.
  • Managerial duties included creating and disseminating various forms of information and documentation to staff and clients, orientating and training new staff, and honing my skills at resolving conflicts and finding working solutions for clients and staff. Worked closely with clients, staff, and superiors in the planning, scheduling, and organizing of special events, and the daily operation of computer labs.
  • My technical abilities required that I diagnose and repair software, hardware, and network troubles beyond the experience of the Learning Environment Support Staff position listed below, and to work in conjunction with other departments to resolve various computing issues.

Learning Environment Support Staff

Integrated Technologies/IUPUI, Indianapolis, IN 1995-1997

  • Helped IUPUI students, faculty, and staff to fully utilize all technology available at IUPUI by assisting in the use and operation of computer equipment and software, and other campus, library, and information resources.
  • Oversaw proper operation of IUPUI public computer labs. Fixed workstation, software, and printer problems. Rebuilt workstations nightly. Set up and maintained A/V equipment. Assisted in the operation of A/V equipment at special events.
  • Worked as part of a team to develop a series of HTML and UNIX training modules for staff. Wrote many other technical and training documents for staff and client use.

  • Facilitator in Operating Systems and COBOL courses. Project leader for several classroom group projects.
  • Converted Windows 3.1 classroom lab to dual-boot Windows NT/Slackware Linux lab as project work for instructor.
